The modern king has become a vermiform appendix - useless when quiet, when obtrusive in danger of removal”
- Austin O'Malley (United Irish leader, 1760-1854)
It was an era when the vermiform appendix was considered a vestigeal organ.
It has been well established now that it is an important site for immune function of the body.
More importantly (besides being an immunological organ) it is usually the first major surgery performed by a junior resident!
And for MBBS, this is perhaps the last question to be asked in the examination before they say "come back after six months!" (You don't even know about appendix!) ....its a rather sentimental topic for the examiners :)
